I'm an American is an experimental animation based on audio interviews from residents of Cambridge Massachusetts. Interviewees were asked to comment on four guiding questions: What are your core political values? What does it mean to be an American citizen? Do you think the country is divided? And, Do you feel safe in the United States? This shows them that people are out there, willing to listen, and taught us that by communicating and working together we can tackle big issues. The animation brings life to these responses in an abstract way using symbolism, movement, and patterns. A diverse range of line, form, and texture from a multitude of photoshop brushes are used throughout to represent the complexity of American identity. The variety in visual techniques is juxtaposed by the limited colors of mostly red and blue. This gives the entire piece cohesion and is derived from the colors of the flag of the United States. This film is supplementing the voice of the people affected by policies and elections to refine how we see American identity and empower the words of the individuals.
